Meet our Engineer Apprentice, Ralitsa

It’s Tomorrow’s Engineer’s Week and we caught up with our first year Maintenance Engineer Apprentice, Ralitsa Raykova to speak about her experience being an apprentice at Tangmere.

10th November 2022

By Tangmere

What was your journey into this apprenticeship?

“I joined Tangmere in 2020 as a Production Operative and when I first started, I remembered being amazed by the new technology used in the Packhouse for grading, packing and cold storage. I soon got to know the machines and from there I progressed to the role of Team Leader.

From my first day at Tangmere, I’ve always had an interest in the operational side of the business and watching over the shoulders of the Maintenance Technicians at work, inspired me to apply for the apprentice position and learn new skills.

The Apprenticeship Programme gives you the best of both worlds; hands-on work experience, as well the opportunity to gain qualifications. Once a week I undertake a classroom session at PETA’s training centre for the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations. This is combined with ‘on-the-job’ learning that helps to build a portfolio towards gaining a Level 3 qualification.”

What does your job look like on an average day?

“Every day is different, and I love the variety! My daily responsibilities include supporting with regular maintenance of the machinery in the Packhouse. This might be performing planned maintenance or repairs, responding to any breakdowns and any other general maintenance duties needed. I also get exposure to the sustainability side of the business supporting the Engineers with routine inspections and servicing of the Combined Heat and Power (CHP) engine that is used to provide the glasshouses with heat, power, and CO2.”

What has been the best part of your apprenticeship so far?

“It’s fantastic to be able to progress and develop professionally ⎼ going from having minimal knowledge and experience, to being able to have input and participate in providing solutions to a breakdown.

Working for a business like Tangmere where everyone has made me feel really welcome and input is encouraged, has enabled me to strengthen my knowledge. Meeting new people who know all aspects when it comes to engineering and manufacturing and to hear about their early experiences is really motivating.

My future plans are to continue developing my skills and to become more confident in my job role. The technology in this industry is always evolving, so I’m excited to continue learning and see where my knowledge will take me here at Tangmere!”
